An Inside Look At New Investments And Innovations For Land Rover
We have frequently mentioned and blogged here about the Land Rover company making its way into various areas of the world. Just recently, there were stories in the press concerning new investments Land Rover is making in Saudia Arabia. We have also mentioned of the areas of interest Land Rover has garnered in China. There were also reports of many Land Rover facilities increasing their workforce shifts to 24 hours. And since May of this year, assembly plants such as the Solihull facility in the U.K. which specialized in Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Defender vehicles now produces 780 vehicles a day.
Where does the bulk of this demand originate? According to a recent article in China Daily the need for Land Rovers in China is the source for a production rate which, also according to the article, refers to Land Rover, globally, having surpassed 320,000 vehicles through the first 11 months of the year. A 32% increase versus the same time period last year.
Above and beyond the high-end technology we experience within the Land Rover automobile, what needs to be understood is the high-end technology within the assembly plants like the Solihull facility.
As an example, in a second facility in Gaydon which is also in the U.K. they are able to use a cutting edge device which is called a “3D Cave” and it allows designers to walk into a space where projections, visuals, and videos, of the car are able to be viewed. This gives the designers opportunity to see the ins and outs of an automobile which is in mid-creation and have real-time and real-scale view of the product, while continuing to make alterations.
Investments continue to be made not only on the production line but also for the customer experience. There are currently plans to build and customize production facilities which will allow the customer to see the automobile, they ordered, being created as it moves down the line. There are also plans to have quasi-celebration ceremonies created and when a specific customer’s automobile is completed and finally rolls off the line, it is done so with fanfare.
