Land Rover Announces New 2015 Discovery Sport Model
The Land Rover Discovery is a legendary name for fans of vintage Land Rovers. While North America did have a Discovery model at one time, it was unceremoniously named the LR4. Thankfully, that legendary Discovery nameplate is returning stateside.
At the recently held 2014 New York Auto Show, Land Rover previewed the Discovery Vision Concept—a veiled presentation that bigger things were coming. During the show, the automaker announced that the concept would soon become the Discovery Sport. Land Rover described the new model, set to debut next year, as a “premium compact SUV.”
While the final design will look little like the Discovery Vision Concept, it may have some of its more technical goodies. Land Rover is hoping to take off-roading to a completely new level of technological brilliance. A new, see-through technology allows the driver an unobstructed view of what’s going on underneath the car when going off road. While the hood doesn’t turn into some miraculous transparent material, the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept uses the lower half of the windshield to display the terrain directly in front and, subsequently, below the vehicle.
Land Rover is looking to expand its lineup. The brand is doing well since its sale to Tata Motors from Ford in 2008. While Land Rover already has a premium compact SUV—the two- or four-door Land Rover Range Rover Evoque—in its lineup, the new model will give the brand more room to expand and entice new customers. The LR2, which isn’t as premium as the Rang Rover Evoque, may go away to make room for the new Discovery Sport model, but there has been no word from Land Rover about any other lineup changes.
Land Rover is hoping to make the Discovery lineup a “family” of models, just like Land Rover has done with the three current Range Rover models. Land Rover is possibly taking a page out of Porsche’s playbook, by creating endless iterations of a few models to fill out their product lineup.
