Land Rover Automakers Demonstrate Autonomous All-Terrain Driving Technologies
Can you imagine it? A self-driving 2016 Land Rover Range Rover or 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport from Land Rover Hinsdale, taking on off-road trails and terrains on its own? The day may be coming when cars can drive autonomously on the highway or along local city streets as well as on off-road trails and terrains. In fact, Land Rover parent company Jaguar Land Rover has been hard at work developing technology that could allow just that. The automaker recently showed off the technology at the Annual Tech Showcase, which took place in Whitley, UK.
Jaguar Land Rover has spent millions of dollars to develop highly automated and fully autonomous driving technologies that would allow all-terrain driving as well as automated driving on paved surfaces. The research project intends to make the technologies available in the broadest applications, such as those found in real life driving situations in multiple environments and weather conditions.
The automaker is developing artificial intelligence technologies that examine the environment around the vehicle at all times. Cameras, LIDAR, radar, and ultrasonic sensors gather information to form a 3D path. The information can then be used to allow the vehicle to, in essence, think for itself as it plans the appropriate route even on off-road surfaces, as well as the appropriate speed the vehicle should travel.
According to Tony Harper, Head of Research at Jaguar Land Rover, “Our all-terrain autonomy research isn’t just about the car driving itself on a motorway or in extreme off-road situations. It’s about helping both the driven and autonomous car make their way safely through any terrain or driving situation.”
In the meantime, however, you’ll get incredible enjoyment driving your 2016 Range Rover or 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport yourself, while autonomous driving technology is still being developed. You’ll enjoy all the nuances of engaging its intelligent 4WD systems as well as its and advanced driver assist technologies such as its available Terrain Response 2, All-Terrain Progress Control, and Adaptive Dynamics systems, which help keep you in control regardless of the conditions or terrains you encounter.
